Barraquito | Punch magazine

March 2024

Chuffed to share new work for Punch magazine, a publication I have long admired. This story features the barraquito, a coffee cocktail and one of Tenerife’s most iconic drinks. I happened to be on Tenerife when the story was commissioned, so I could provide both images and text. You can read the full piece here. With thanks to Sergio Martín, of Las Terrazas del Sauzal restaurant, who kindly shared his recipe with us.

Marigel Álvarez | El País Gastro

August 2023

Very happy to have joined the team of contributors at El País Gastro, the new section of Spain’s leading newspaper El País.

My first story (writing and photography) is about a woman I deeply admire, Marigel Álvarez, a self-made entrepreneur who saved one of Asturias’s most legendary cheeses from disappearing and who also runs a charming rural hotel in one of Asturias’ most beautiful rural settings: Redes Natural Park. Read full story here.

A link to the past, a taste of home | Whetstone magazine

September 2021

New work for Whetstone magazine, a long form feature on roxóns, a pork meat dish from northern Spain that is very attached to peasant culture and rural seasonal celebrations.

This mag is a favourite indie publication. With a focus on championing food to expand human empathy and challenging mainstream trends, they publish unique food stories from around the world. The work appears in the Issue 8, available to pre-order now. Please support independent journalism and buy or subscribe here.

La Calle del Agua | El Salto Diario

December 2020

New article about the documentary “La Calle del Agua”, in which director Celia Viada tells the story of forgotten pioneer photographer Benjamina Miyar (1881 - 1961). Born in a rural small village in Asturias, northern Spain, Miyar was an independent woman who learnt the trade of her family, clockmaking, and run the clockmaker’s workshop when her dad passed away. She was a creative self-taught photographer who didn’t fit in the submissive role the fascist dictatorship had imposed on Spanish women. She was openly left leaning and was tortured and arrested at least four times.

The work is published in El Salto Diario, and available online.

Free spirit, free wines | Whetstone magazine

September 2020

New work for Whetstone magazine, a favourite indie publication. With a focus on championing food to expand human empathy and challenging mainstream trends, they publish unique food stories from around the world.

For the current issue, I wrote a long form feature on Victoria Torres, a fifth generation winemaker from La Palma, Canary Islands, who makes excellent wines despite all the challenges, including climate change.

The work appears in the Issue 6, out now. Please support independent journalism and buy or subscribe here.
